TheRBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner City) program is the Memphis Redbirds' implementation of RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), a program sponsored by Major League Baseball in an attempt to renew interest in baseball in inner-city neighborhoods. The Memphis RBI program helps inner-city children, gives them safe summer activity uniforms, equipment, daily lunches and Redbirds games. All these things and more are provided during the seven-week-long summer RBI program funded by the Memphis Redbirds Foundation. This program gives children living in troubled neighborhoods a fun and safe activity during the summer months. Since the program's inception in 1998, the number of children involved has grown to approximately 1,100, and there are now sites in virtually every corner of the Memphis, Tennessee area. Currently, there are 14 RBI sites in:
North: Frayser and Douglass
South: Whitehaven and Corry
East: East and Sheffield
West: West Memphis I and West Memphis II
Each RBI participant enjoys the benefits of playing organized baseball or softball in a positive environment. However, this program has accomplished much more than just giving children a chance to play ball - it has assisted children in disadvantaged areas by teaching them how to help themselves through goal-setting, self-respect, discipline, teamwork and community pride. The program gives children a positive alternative to the dangers of drugs, gangs and violence that surround them.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, and financial need as demonstrated through Pell Grant eligibility.
How many awards will be given?
Awards will be granted to a maximum of 12 recipients.
How much are the awards?
Each award recipient will receive a need-based award of up to $5,000 per year. Award payments of one-half the award amount will be made twice a year (September and January) directly to his/her educational institution. These awards are renewable for up to three years, or until the training certificate, associate degree or bachelor's degree is earned, whichever comes first, subject to continued satisfactory academic performance as defined by the educational institution.
Can I use the award for graduate study?

How do I learn more about these Scholarships?
Please contact Katie Ringel, Community Affairs, Major League Baseball at: katie.ringel@mlb.com.
When are the letter of recommendation and school transcripts due? Can they be sent separately from my application?
Application materials must be mailed in one packet by the April 1st due date. Transcripts and letters of recommendation will not be accepted under separate cover. Incomplete, e-mailed or faxed applications will not be considered.
Can I apply online?
No. You may print the application from the MLB.com/rbi and mail it to the noted address, but it is not possible to apply online. If you do print the application from the web site, be sure to print all pages.
Can I fax or e-mail my application?
Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted.
Do I have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in order to apply for a RBI for RBI scholarship?
Yes. You must be a citizen, national or legal resident of the U.S. or Puerto Rico in order to apply.
Is there an income limit?
Financial need is a factor that we consider in awarding scholarships. If you think that you will be eligible for financial aid at the colleges to which you are applying, you should apply for a RBI for RBI Scholarship, in addition to applying for government Financial Aid.
Do you need verification of my parents'/guardians' income?
The application asks your parents for their 2010 adjusted gross income as stated in last year's federal income tax return; that is, the return that they filed when you were a junior in high school. By their signatures, they also agree to provide proof of income, including copies of income tax returns, if requested. Alternately, you may include a copy of your FAFSA and SAR (Student Aid Report).
Can I use the RBI for RBI Scholarship at any college and for any major?
The scholarship may be used at any accredited degree-granting two-year college, four-year college or university or vocational school within the United States and Puerto Rico. Recipients may study any academic discipline of their choice.
If I am awarded a RBI for RBI Scholarship, how do I get my money?
A check will be sent at the start of each semester for one-half the annual award directly to your chosen institution to be credited to your account.
If I am awarded other scholarships or financial aid, does it affect my eligibility for the RBI for RBI Scholarship?
You are eligible for a RBI for RBI Scholarship even if you receive other scholarships or financial aid, unless the total amount of financial assistance you receive exceeds your college expenses, in which case the amount will be adjusted or forfeited.
When are the winners notified?
Scholarship recipients will be notified in May. The names of all scholarship recipients will be posted on MLB.com/rbi. Letters to all applicants will be mailed in May indicating the disposition of your application.
Where does funding for the RBI for RBI Scholarships come from?
The scholarships are fully funded by MLB Charities.
Major League Baseball Charities, Inc. recognizes the importance of encouraging academic excellence in addition to athletic skills. That's why, in 2007, Major League Baseball Charities, Inc. established the "RBI (Runs Batted In) for RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) Scholarship Fund", to help provide financial assistance to youth who participate in the RBI program and wish to pursue post secondary education.
In 2012, the fund will provide annual scholarships of up to $5,000 to up to twelve (12) selected RBI players who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills and financial need and who plan to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, vocational school or technical school. The actual amount of each scholarship grant is based on the recipient's annual tuition and expenses. In 2008, six $5,000 scholarships were awarded to RBI participants; from 2009 to 2011, twelve students received $5,000 scholarships.
RBI Scholarship Program
MLB Charities appreciates that through the encouragement of education, underserved youth will have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. The RBI for RBI Scholarship Fund was created to recognize young men and women who are dedicated to both personal and academic excellence. Financial assistance will be granted to scholars who have the desire, but not the means, to fulfill their dreams through higher education.
