“Music has always been a part of my life. It’s always been around me. It was an essential part of my life to where I started to breathe it, sleep it, and eat it.”
Vance Young has been drawn to music for as long as he could remember. His aunts and uncles were musicians and singers so there was always music playing when they were around him. He loved all music and wasn’t at all particular to who or what he listened to as long as it sounded good and kept his attention.
As a kid, he could remember walking past an apartment down the hall from his and always hearing music. He was a bit hesitant to stop or slow down past the doorway because the door was cracked all the time. One day as he walked by, the man in the apartment invited him in. Awed by the multiple computer screens and board with buttons that lit up, Young became immediately intrigued. His neighbor offered to teach him how to use this equipment, and that’s when Young became more familiar with different sounds. He was learning how to make music but his sound was more similar to that of video games and movie openers. He became quite fond of making music for soundtracks too.
In high school, Young developed the skills to play the keyboard and started to carry it around everywhere he went. He was able to play songs after just hearing them but didn’t become accustomed to reading music. He found a job and started to work to support himself but he continued to put in work when it came to strengthening his craft. Young was introduced to an updated computer program and that led to him learn how to create and customize patterns of his own. His projects started to sound as he intended and that kept him focused on mastering the program.
Fie Hazel, an artist out of Chicago, heard his material and was interested in working with him. In 2007, they worked together to record tracks but since Young had limited mixing and mastering skills, his flow of producing music came to a slow halt. While working to keep his dream alive, he had continuous support from his friends. This motivated him when it seemed as though his future in music was uncertain.
It wasn’t until 2011 when Angel Terez heard some of Young’s music and heard something different. He wanted to work with Young to better train his ear because he could see his potential.
“If it wasn’t for him, I would not have learned how important it is to just listen. The music that I make today is because of him.”
Young was confident when he met Dionna Harding (Los Angeles), of Black Pearl Entertainment. During that time, Young also met Alonzo Black of ZOBE Records. He was working for both production companies at the same time and after four months of deadlines, confusion, and some things not being organized, Young decided to become his own boss.
“I realized I was doing all of this work for everybody else instead of doing it for myself, Young said “
In July 2013, He was contacted by Beno of Mechanical Beats in Chicago. After working with them for some time, he was told that his productions were radio ready but his radio capacity couldn’t be handled. When Young separated from Mechanical Beats, he started to work with Fie Hazel again and wanted to invest in her. They worked together to come up with a great distribution deal. He has since then recorded with Angie A. Love, an artist from Chicago as well.
He loves to listen to artists such as Usher, 50 Cent, Linkenpark, Deaf Tone, and Drake, to name a few. His doesn’t classify his music into one genre. He also enjoys listening to alternative music the most but enjoys listening to music organized by an orchestra. He loves the calm s feeling it brings him.
