This is a special FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Ausar Ra Black Hawk episode based off of the audio from this year's great DC PodFest panel on diversity in podcasting ("Not All Podcasters Are White") that occurred at the Wonderbread Factory in Washington, DC on Saturday, November 11, 2017 featuring DJ Fusion (FuseBox Radio Broadcast; http://www.FuseBoxRadio.com), Ebone Bell (Tagg Nation; http://www.TaggNation.com), Morgan Givens (Dispatches; http://www.goatrodeodc.com/dispatches) & Charneil Bush (What About Your Friends; https://soundcloud.com/what-about-your-friends) talking candidly about their experiences as Podcasters of Color on multiple fronts (folks' trying to put what you talk about on your show in a box from the outside community - and sometimes your own - in the realms of race, class, sexuality, etc., how everyone got started with podcasting, the hustle one has to be on to be a quality indie media outlet at large, what IS diversity honestly, how to deal with people trying to push back against your viewpoints & expressing them and more). Capital Pride Festival (2017): FuseBox Radio x BlackRadioIsBack.com Photo Essay

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, DJ Fusion of the FuseBox Radio Broadcast went out for a few hours in the blazing summer sun to check out the crowd, get in some cool photography and see some performances (featuring everyone from The Pointer Sisters to Tinashe to various folks from RuPaul's Drag Race & more) at the 42nd Annual Pride Festival in the Nation’s Capital up and down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC.

There was a huge mix of diverse folks in the throes of protest (mostly against the current presidential administration, with some folks talking & getting into talk change needed in long term issues in the LGBTQ community that have happened over multiple presidencies) and party (since folks need to let loose here and there during crazy times) who attended the free event of music, food, vending and then some during D.C. Pride Weekend up and down the streets, though not as active and/or hardcore has what I was told during the Pride Parade the day before.

For more information on the Capital Pride, visit their official website at http://www.CapitalPride.com!

Music Festival Season 2017: Moogfest Review & Photo Mini-Essay

What's up FuseBox Radio & BlackRadioIsBack.com crew!

We just came back from a great weekend in Durham, NC for our second year of covering Moogfest.

For those who are not familiar with this particular music festival, Moogfest is a celebration of the legacy of Bob Moog, the visionary engineer who pioneered the analog synthesizer and other technology tools used by artists like Stevie Wonder, David Bowie & plenty more musicians folks rock with to this day.

The four day event consisted of a lot of musical performances (from a nice mix of indie to mainstream music artists in various genres, including up-and-comers like Sudan Archives from Stones Throw Records, festival favorites like Flying Lotus and long-time vets like DJ Premier, Animal Collective and Talib Kweli - and that's a VERY small sampling of folks who performed), interactive workshops, panels, film screenings, visual & audio interactive art exhibitions and more.

Moogfest is unique in the aspect of being on the East Coast (Durham for us in the D.C. Metro was just about 4 hours away to travel to) and being actually relatively affordable for the average person to roll out too as a semi-niche mid-range festival (general admission gets you into a hell of a lot in four days and VIP is basically you being about that serious music creation & producer life with additional synthesizer building sessions, special parties in between to chill and more).

The way the music festival scene is going with these events either getting co-opted by huge corporate companies (which has made some lineups feel like cut-and-paste jobs of the same artists in rotation, meaning you're not going to get many chances to discover anyone new & interesting to add onto your personal playlists) or a tad TOO arrogant coasting off of Fumes of Dope Festivals Past while giving at best meh content to consumers (too may heads to name), it's dope to attend a gathering like Moogfest where the passion for music is reflected with everyone who is attending, including the artists.

The chill vibe in Durham is pretty awesome as well, with the city being really accommodating to all of the Moogfest activity going on in it's various downtown venues, a solid food scene (hit up Dames' Chicken and Waffles if you go down there and thank me later) and not (at least yet, fingers and toes crossed) trying to run people's pockets with hotel room prices for folks coming out of town.

It's a perfect setting for the semi-nerd contingent that would roll down to this event to check out music performances, learn about music creation & business, care about the world beyond a stage, sip on something (insert your drinks of choice here, with or sans booze) and just relax being amongst like minded folks who are WAY more about actual music at a music festival than trying to be hip & more concerned about getting on the 'Gram with fashion and whatnot. If this sounds like your wave, Moogfest is for you!

Check out what went down at this year's Moogfest (and to stay on point with 2018 Moogfest announcements) via their official website at http://www.Moogfest.com.

For more a LOT more photography from this year's Moogfest from DJ Fusion than the prime pictures from this article, check out the official FuseBox Radio Photography page (http://www.FuseBoxRadioPhotography.com) and our official Flickr Page

Our extended commentary during that week after being back from some illness from the past 2 weeks touched base on the crazy winter weather in the U.S., net neutrality finally passing via the FCC in the United States (for now), the FOX soap opera "Empire" becoming a huge thing in current popular culture and our feelings on how the TV series has developed & Black broadcast TV at large, the passing of actor Leonard Nimoy & basketball player Anthony Mason, actress Monique talking about being blackballed in Hollywood & issues with director Lee Daniels, various Grammys & Oscar Award controversies from this year (with Kanye West's "Artist of the Year" complaint, Beyonce singing the lead song from the movie "Selma" instead of the original artist Ledisi, Patricia Arquette's terribly misguided backstage statements, etc.) and some other things here and there. There is no new new Black Agenda Report segment on this week's show due to our extended commentary.

Conference Season 2017: Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America

What's up everyone!

This past week, the FuseBox Radio Broadcast and BlackRadioIsBack.com family had the privilege of being able to cover a part of the 2017 Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

As a craft beer lover, it was pretty cool to be able to go to this professional industry conference to literally see how the brews get made, from the various exhibitors on deck at the Convention Center (which included distributors, marketing folks, graphic artists, machinery, packaging companies and more), seminars going down, brewery tours in the DMV (the pictures below are from a brewery tour we went to in Fredrick, MD, which including Monocacy Brewing Co, Rockwell Brewery, Mad Science Brewing Company and Brewers Ally), go to networking events (in and out of the building, with a decent amount of them open to the public), presentations, special beer tastings and more.

Overall, this is an awesome & enjoyable educational event I think that should have a chance to be open to more than professionals, if at all possible even for just one day.

The one constructive critique I can give to the Craft Brewers Conference is that I would love to see at next year's event would be a bit more focus on how to get more American minorities involved on the business & media coverage side of craft beer.

I did not see that much of that side of things during this year's conference and such a subject is going to be of extreme importance in the near future, especially with more and more that population in their mid-20s and above getting into enjoying it as a part of recreational drinking enjoyment, being interested in crafting their own beer, making review podcasts/websites/magazines about the diversity of craft beer and then some.

For more detailed information about the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America over at their official website, check out their official website at http://www.CraftBrewersConference.com.

For more a LOT more photography from this year's Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America than the prime pictures from this article on display below, check out the official FuseBox Radio Photography page (http://www.FuseBoxRadioPhotography.com) and our official Flickr Page

Tell Us About You and Your Career
My mission for BlackRadioIsBack.com, as the official blog of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast, is to bring back the spirit of Black Radio via the Internet and the World Wide Web.

In the past few years, the term, mission and mentality of "Black Radio" in the United States has been at the very least ignored and that the worst, totally disregarded, disrespected and shunned.

In my mind, Black Radio at its best is & will always be the format that brings to listeners:

1. A balanced combination of diverse & interesting music in multiple formats – after all Black Radio was the format that first exposed Jazz, Funk, Soul, Blues, Rock Music - yes, Rock and Roll has Black American musical foundations - do the history, Gospel and Hip-Hop music to the masses.

2. A quality mix of news, interviews and commentary to the Black American community (and to anyone else interested) - editorial, political, health, social, etc.

3. A mission to truly connect with its listener community on multiple fronts Black Radio, in most of the mainstream airwaves, has been taken over by what's called "urban radio", "contemporary urban radio", etc.

It seems that with this format, what most stations, radio hosts and mixers do is keep things in a very narrow vision of what the Black American cultural experience is supposed to be like and how its represented - basically, watering things down.

For example:

* When you hear the same joint for the 1,000,000th time on the radio and you know the artist has an album release (or multiple releases) out that you can at least TRY to hear more tracks from before a 3 month period OR you always hear the same music artists in constant rotation = NOT quality Black Radio

* When "Old School" music is defined as being from 5 years ago and/or not acknowledging music from the past = NOT quality Black Radio

* When there is only one viewpoint of what Black America and Black Americans represent (either straight 24-7 criminality without consequences or creativity or only the civil rights generation is great with everyone else not under that being subpar) = NOT quality Black Radio

* Putting on the same sound effect and/or screaming over 10 times in a row for a 3 minute song that is not even hot = NOT quality Black Radio

This list can go on for days…

BlackRadioIsBack.com will have music audio & videos from all over the world along with reviews (for both mainstream and independent artists), written and audio interviews with various folks in the community (music artists, authors, businesspeople, activists, etc.), book, magazine and movie reviews and editorials.

BlackRadioIsBack.com will also be a location where others who are promoting the spirit of Black Radio will also be represented and highlighted.

I hope that everyone enjoys the site and gets stimulated by the true Black Radio Experience!

Peace,

Mary Nichols (DJ Fusion)

_______________

INFO & DESCRIPTION ABOUT DJ FUSION & THE FUSEBOX RADIO BROADCAST (UPDATED: December 2008):
Umm, OK....I'm DJ Fusion (real name: Mary Nichols), a short (5 feet tall even), above average looking (I think at least a "B", even if a low one....) African-American female DJ and graduate at Rutgers University (c/o 2001) with a degree in American Studies and a minor in History.

Since 1998, I have been a lot Radio, Club and Mixtape DJ, with my main music focus for my DJ sets ranging from genres of Hip-Hop (Commercial & Independent), Breakbeats, Reggae, Funk, Acid Jazz, Soul, House, Disco, DC GoGo, Electronica, Rock and Classics.

Since its foundation in 1998 - when I created the show as an undergraduate student at Rutgers University - New Brunswick in New Jersey - the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast has been around to expose the absolute BEST of Hip-Hop & Soul Music from all over the world (and Black Music in general) along with bringing quality interviews, news, and commentary. Along with fellow co-host/DJ/Producer Jon Judah (added on as part of the FuseBox Radio crew in 2004), we try our best to stick to that mission and bring great sounds, vibe and content to the masses.

From it's roots at Rutgers University Radio (WRSU 88.7 FM), the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast is a mixshow that has spread to the following internet radio stations and outlets (as of December 2008):

UrbanNetwork.com's The Mix Internet Radio Station (Urban Network Magazine), ConspiracyUK.com, FONYE Radio, VI Radio, MyBlockRadio.net, OKRP.com, Beyond.FM, Sprint Radio Extra/mSpot (via the WWACN/Worldwide Alpha Communications Network), DurdeeSouth.com, Planet Urban/PlanetUrban.com.au, BlockJams.com, AmalgamDigital.com, Reeweine Radio/ReeWineMusic.com, SouthBound.FM, TheBestJams.com, CrackAudio.com, EG Radio/ExtravaGangsta Radio, Stop Beefin' Stop Eatin' Radio, Ceesiety Radio , Mixshow Blast Radio, Progressive Blend Radio, DeadBeat Radio, FlyTunes.FM/FlyCast, HipHopSoulRadio.com, Rutgers University Radio (WRSU 88.7 FM), Digiwaxx Presents: The Blast , 1.FM Jamz (coming Jan. 1, 2009), The6.FM (coming soon),Blayze University Radio (coming soon), Gutta Muzik (HD) Radio (coming soon), StreetsD.com - Street Mos Magazine Radio (coming soon) and BlackCoffeeChannel.com (coming soon)

Under the business, FuseBox Media LLC, I also engage freelance article writing for various Internet and paper publications and do various music projects (music production, mixtape mixing and hosting, etc.).

The official blog of the FuseBox Radio Broadcast was established in October of 2007, BlackRadioIsBack.com (http://www.BlackRadioisBack.com). BlackRadioIsBack.com is a writen extension of the radio show and contains things such as music, book and movie reviews, editorials, world news highlights and more.

Besides being a DJ, I also do live DJ sets and events in the NJ, NYC, Philadelphia & DC Metro areas.
